Our History
The Greater Fall River Art Assocation was officially founded in 1956 by people interested in bringing to our community an awareness and understanding of the visual arts. The organizing members met over 60 years ago occupying a building across from the YMCA on Pine Street in Fall River, MA. The first national show was held in 1957 and first regional show in 1965.
Our Belmont Street building was purchased in 1963 for $8,000 and built in 1904 by A. H. Leeming for Charles Cole. It is part of the Historic Highlands of Fall River. The first floor rooms are unique gallery spaces used for exhibitions and in 2010 several rooms were converted to "artists-in-residence"studio spaces that contribute to the vibrant exchange of art education, exhibitions, classes and celebration of Visual Arts. We currently have 6 resident artists: Diane Azevedo, Tiago Finato, Joseph Guevara, Joan L'Homme, Sharon Owens & Vania Noveirca Viveiros.
The Preservation Society of Fall River has its office in our buidling. Learn more about Fall River's Historical significance and its architectural heritage. Click to view this informative video "Fall River" presented by Jim Soule, President of the Preservation Society.
Greater Fall River Art Association
The GFRAA is offering art classes & workshops with dedicated teachers in a variety of media. Student shows are held annually to celebrate the artistic endeavors of those participating in our classes. We participate in city wide events to enrich the "art scene" of the Fall River area and wish to involve audiences of all ages and backgrounds in diverse art and educational programs.
On the pages of this website you will find information about our instructors, classes, exhibits, the WPA permanent collection, the Minna Kenler collection, upcoming events, directions and membership. Individual Membership is only $25.00/yr. We are a volunteer organization and strive to offer regular business hours. Gallery hours are: Friday 12 - 3, Sat. 1 - 4, Sunday 1 - 4 pm. We are also available by appointment and open during classes.
The GFRAA invites and welcomes new members with the message that you need only to have a love of art to join the association. We encourage both Artists and Art lovers to experience the GFRAA.
